MAUI UNITED HONGWANJI
BUDDHIST WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION

BYLAWS

ARTICLE I – NAME AND AFFILIATION

The name of this organization shall be the Honpa Hongwanji Mission, Maui United Buddhist Women’s Association (HHM MUBWA) and shall be an affiliate of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission, Hawaii Federation of Buddhist Women’s Association.

ARTICLE II – HEADQUARTERS

The Headquarters shall be located at the temple of the presiding president.

ARTICLE III – PURPOSE

Section 1. To perpetuate and promote the teachings of Jodo Shinshu.

Section 2. To foster fellowship among its members and to participate in the general welfare and betterment of the community.

ARTICLE IV – ACTIVITIES

In order to realize the objectives in Article III, this Association shall support the propagation of Buddhism as well as other activities which are considered necessary and important.

ARTICLE V – MEMBERSHIP

The membership shall consist of members of all the HHM MUBWA units.

ARTICLE VII – ELECTION

Section 1. Three members shall represent each Hongwanji unit except Lanai shall have two.

Section 2. The slate of officers selected by each Maui District Hongwanji Buddhist Women’s Association shall be approved at the Fall Representative Meeting.

Section 3. The Officers and Directors shall serve for a term of one year.

Section 4. The presiding unit shall provide the slate for the President, Recording Secretary and Treasurer.

Section 5. One member from each unit shall serve as Vice President with the exception of the presiding unit and immediate past presiding unit. A Lanai representative shall serve as the third Vice President and not be included in the rotational responsibility.

Section 6. The Assistant Treasurer shall be the outgoing Treasurer.

Section 7. One member from each unit shall serve as Auditor with the exception of the presiding unit, immediate past presiding unit and Lanai.

Section 8. The Directors shall include one per unit except the presiding unit.

Section 9. In the event of a vacancy, the unit represented shall fill the vacancy for the unexpired term.

ARTICLE VIII – DUTIES OF OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS

Section 1. The President shall preside at all meetings, appoint all committee chairpersons, shall serve as an ex-officio of all standing and special committees and shall perform other duties pertaining to her office.

Section 2. The Vice President shall perform the duties of the President in the absence or inability of the President.

Section 3. The Secretary shall keep a record of all the activities and proceedings of the Association and shall be responsible for communications of the Association.

Section 4. The Treasurer shall keep an accurate account of all receipts and disbursements, submit a financial report to the representative and general membership meetings, submit a monthly financial report and quarterly reports of other Maui United accounts to Honpa Hongwanji Mission, and submit a year-end summary report and prepare the budget for the following year.

Section 5. The Assistant Treasurer shall assist the Treasurer.

Section 6. The Auditors shall examine the books and accounts of the Treasurer.

Section 7. The Directors shall assist the officers.

ARTICLE IX – MINISTER ADVISOR AND ADVISORS

Section 1. The Head Minister Advisor (Shuji) shall be the minister of the presiding unit.

Section 2. The remaining Maui District Hongwanji ministers and their spouses (including the Shuji’s spouse) shall serve as Advisors.

Section 3. The Head Minister Advisor shall counsel and assist in the activities of the Association.

ARTICLE X – MEETINGS

Section 1. There shall be two (2) Representative Meetings and two (2) General Membership Meetings in each fiscal year.

Section 2. Representative Meetings shall be held in the spring and fall of each fiscal year.

Section 3. General Membership Meetings shall be held in the spring and fall of each fiscal year.

Section 4. Special meetings shall be called by the President as needed or deemed necessary upon request of three (3) or more executive officers.

ARTICLE XI – QUORUM

Section 1. Attendance of the majority of the Board shall constitute a quorum.

Section 2. Attendance of six (6) Board members shall constitute a quorum for Special Meetings.

ARTICLE XII – REPRESENTATIVES TO THE HAWAII FEDERATION MEETINGS

Section 1. The President shall be a representative to the Hawaii Federation meetings.

Section 2. The First Vice President shall be a Director of the Hawaii Federation.

Section 3. The term of service is one year.

ARTICLE XIII – FISCAL YEAR

The fiscal year shall be the calendar year.

ARTICLE XIV – FINANCES

All expenditures must be authorized by the Executive Board.

ARTICLE XV – AMENDMENTS

The Bylaws may be amended at the General Membership Meeting by a two-third vote of the members present.
